NSAC Says Belfort License No Problem, But TRT Could Be

With a UFC Middleweight title fight on the horizon, it seems as though Vitor Belfort will attempt to apply for a Therapeutic Use Exemption for his upcoming fight against Chris Weidman in Las Vegas. And while he should have no issues in applying for a license in Las Vegas despite a previously failed drug test, getting permission to use TRT could be much more problematic.

“I think TRT is something new, and [an exemption] hasn’t been used very frequently,” NSAC chairperson Francisco Aguilar told MMAjunkie. “To have it regulated in regards to Mr. Belfort, it’s new territory for us. But I don’t think that sways the decision one way or the other…giving him a license is not going to be a problem…The issue is going to come from a TRT exemption.”

The issue for getting the TUE of course comes from his previous failed drug test, which happened in 2006 after his first fight against Dan Henderson. He tested positive for 4-hydroxytestosterone, an anabolic steroid.

Regardless of the TRT controversy, his fight with Weidman remains a highly anticipated one. Belfort (24-10, 13-6 UFC) has won three fights in a row via head-kick knockouts, and his only losses in his last twelve fights come from Jon Jones and Anderson Silva. Meanwhile, Weidman looks to continue his undefeated record, most recently retaining his belt with a second-round TKO win over Anderson Silva. A specific date has not yet been announced for the fight.
