Unforeseen complications have left the highly anticipated rematch between Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen in jeopardy. The UFC may have to move the event move from a soccer stadium in Rio (Which has the capacity to hold 80,000 fans, making this the biggest event in UFC history) to the MGM grand in Las Vegas. Silva’s manager Ed Soares spoke about the situation on “The MMA Show with Mauro Ranallo” stating “A United Nations conference is going on the week of the fight. Originally it was in Sao Paulo so it wouldn’t affect it, but now that it’s in Rio they have to make the logistical adjustments.” Complications with finding enough hotel rooms and security leave the event in a state of uncertainty; though Dana White and the UFC are working to find hotels in surrounding areas, there is a possibility that the event will be moved to Vegas.

Dana White is working hard to keep the event in Brazil because it would undoubtedly be the biggest show in UFC history. It would also give the champion Silva the chance of defending his title at home. Soares says “They’re working out those details now and hopefully (we’ll know) by the end of this week, beginning of next week.”

Silva vs. Sonnen II could be the biggest fight in UFC history. The rematch has been one of the most anticipated fights since their first meeting at UFC 117 in August, 2010. In that fight Sonnen caught Silva early in the first round and continued to dominate with a relentless ground and pound attack. Fans all around the world thought they were about to witness the fall of the long time champion, but with only two minutes remaining in the fight Silva locked up a triangle choke that forced Sonnen to tap, retaining his belt for a seventh time.

It is no secret that Chael Sonnen believes he can defeat the current champion, whether or not he will get the opportunity to do it in Silva’s backyard is yet to be decided.

According to Soares on Mauro Ranallo’s The MMA Show.“As of right now we have nothing confirmed [about a date and venue switch]”
