On this Saturday’s UFC 160 in Las Vegas, Gray Maynard will be facing T.J. Grant to determine who will get the title shot against current champion, Benson Henderson. Had Maynard not won his previous fight nearly a year ago he might not even be there. Maynard’s win against Clay Guida via split decision caused quite a bit of criticism due to Guida’s lack of a better game plan. However, Maynard says had he not won this past June, he might not even be in the sport right now. On a recent interview Maynard said:
“Most of the time, people get pissed at what I’m doing (in a fight). But that time, I got pissed at what he was doing. It’s an emotional sport. That happened, and thank God I got the win on that – because I don’t think I’d even be in the sport right now.”
Eventually Maynard made the decision, that he enjoyed doing what he does.
“Being in the game, going through all those battles, it’s become pretty enjoyable. I enjoy everything now – the camps, the crowd, the cheers, the boos, punching, getting punched. It’s a fun job, and you’ve got to take it in and enjoy it. That’s all I’m doing now. I go out and do the best I can, give it my all and enjoy the whole thing of it.”
Maynard admits he was surprised when UFC President, Dana White, called him for the fight a month ago he says he’s not going to take off the goal- the title .
“I’m a realist, of course, so every time I try to move ahead, Grant’s head pops up in my head. That’s all I can concentrate on. And of course, a lot of things can happen- injuries, all kinds of stuff. It’s a great opportunity, but I’ve got to concentrate on trying to be the best guy I can be against Grant- not only so I can have a chance at the belt, but to beat Ben.”
