Metamoris 3 is a unique submission grappling event, featuring many of the top names from both mixed martial arts and submission grappling in intriguing matches. One of the most evenly matched matches of the event is Vinny Magalhaes vs Keenan Cornelius. Vinny is a Royler Gracie black belt, who has competed predominantly in No-Gi competition and Mixed Martial Arts for the last several years, mostly in the
Heavyweight and Absolute divisions. The decorated Brazilian won the prestigious ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship in 2011 in the 99+ kg division, and took home two Bronze Medals in 2009. He has also won No-Gi Worlds, and has competed in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
Keenan Cornelius (pictured) is a rising young star in the submission grappling world. The Andre Galvao black belt is only 22 years old, and most recently brought home two bronze medals from ADCC 2013, including in the absolute division, despite being somewhat undersized. He also notably won a “grand slam” as a purple belt, bringing home double gold medals from every major IBJJF tournament.
The match-up should be an exciting one, since both men are very aggressive submission hunters. Vinny is mostly a bottom-side player, who looks for lots of flying submissions from the feet, and looks for arm-locks and triangle chokes from Rubber Guard. He also spends a lot of time attacking his opponents’ feet, more than willing to risk giving up position by diving on heel hooks and toe holds. Meanwhile, Keenan is an aggressive guard-passer, who is excellent at taking the back from multiple positions. Once on the back, Keenan tends to aggressively chain submission attempts, going from rear-naked chokes to arm-triangle chokes to triangle chokes. However, Vinny is incredibly difficult to submit or control from any position due to his extreme flexibility, as shown in his 2011 win over Fabricio Werdum. Expect to see a large number of submission attempts and wild transitions from both grapplers. Keenan may very well be able to take Vinny’s back off of footlock attempts and via passing 50-50 Guard, but the odds of him finishing the Brazilian are low. Keenan will most likely have positional control for the majority of the match, but will likely have much of this negated due to the aggressive nature of Vinny. Expect either a submission win for Vinny Magalhaes, or a closely-fought draw.
