BJ Penn puts a stamp on and ends the Matt Hughes trilogy at UFC 123

BJ Penn has been a UFC champion in two different weight classes. He was a huge underdog in his first UFC Welterweight Championship bout at UFC 46, a weight class above his preferred, but he cleanly won the championship in the first round by submission – by beating legend Matt Hughes. No one expected Penn to win, but after he won so quickly in their first encounter no one expected him to lose the rematch either. Penn was injured early in the fight and lost by TKO in the 3rd round of UFC 63. The third and final fight between the two occurred at UFC 123 and in that fight BJ put a stamp on it by dispatching of Hughes at :21 of round 1 by KO. It stands out as one of the most decisive finales to any trilogy in the UFC.

Tito Ortiz almost submits Lyoto Machida at UFC 84

Former UFC Light Heavyeweight Champion Tito Ortiz had just lost to Chuck Liddell for a 2nd time and fought Rashad Evans to a draw. He was on the outs with Dana White, and was most likely going to be cut from the UFC if he lost his next fight. Well, his next fight was with the incredibly talented former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Lyoto Machida. Many thought this was Dana White’s way of sending Tito Ortiz packing by squaring him off against a ringer. What we got as fans was a game Ortiz who almost submitted Lyoto at the end of the 3rd round. Tito locked in a triangle armbar and if that hold would have been as tight as it was in the first round before they started to sweat heavily – it might have been the end of the fight. It was not to be, but watching Ortiz almost shock the world to a huge eruption of cheers from the fans made that a truly memorable moment.

Mirko Cro Cop enters the Octagon at UFC 67

Cro Cop was one of the most feared strikers in the PrideFC organization and fans had been praying to the MMA gods that he would come to the UFC and clean house in the heavyweight division. While the house cleaning didn’t happen the arrival itself did and it was exciting. Cro Cop came to the Octagon to the PrideFC theme song and the crowd was electric. Though his performance against an outmatched Sanchez was lackluster he did finally enter the Octagon and it was truly memorable.
