Matthew Riddle (7-3 MMA) announced his retirement from mixed martial arts on Monday night.
The 27-year-old, Riddle, was slated to fight Luis Melo (29-11 MMA) at next weeks Bellator 100 event, which features the opening round of the promotions Season 9 welterweight tournament.
However, Riddle apparently suffered a cracked rib in training and thus has decided to call it a career due to financial reasons.
Here is what Riddle wrote on his twitter:
@riddletuf7: I’m retiring from MMA today, I cracked my rib and I can’t fight Sept 20th. @BellatorMMA can’t give me a fight this year so I can’t afford it!
Riddle fought a total of 12 bouts in his MMA career, all of which took place under the UFC banner. Riddle, who competed on season 7 of “The Ultimate Fighter”, won his final four fights inside the octagon. However, two of those victories were overturned after Riddle, a medical marijuana user, failed post-fight drug tests due to marijuana metabolites.
Riddle was released by the UFC after his most recent no-contest, which came agaisnt Che Mills at February’s UFC on FUEL TV 7 event.
Riddle joined the Bellator MMA ranks in May but never actually competed for the promotion.
