Matt Hughes: Ortiz and Couture weren’t loyal and now they’re paying the price

Throughout the years many fighters, fans and media members have had disputes with the UFC/Zuffa, or more specifically with UFC President Dana White. Most notably would have to be former heavyweight and light heavyweight champion Randy “The Natural” Couture and Tito Ortiz.

We all remember the days of Tito’s prime when he wore his “Dana is my B*tch” shirt, and Couture’s contract dispute a few years back that ended up in court. Then both fighters allegedly worked out their differences with the UFC and Dana White, but over the past year things seem to have resurfaced.

Many fighters from the pioneer days of MMA still have much appreciation for the Dana White and the UFC for how it brought the sport out of small-time shows to public television and is now considered a mainstream sport.

Former welterweight champion Matt Hughes had this to say to MMA Fighting about the rift between the two former UFC stars and the promotion:

“The way I look at it, it was their decision. Randy [Couture] sued the UFC, he’s left the UFC so he should know that there’s going to be a little bad blood there from what’s happened. I’m not saying the UFC’s never done anything to Randy, that just comes to mind. Tito [Ortiz], the same way. I think he’s badmouthed the UFC a little bit. I would say [this] about the UFC, if you’re good to them, they’re good to you. Those guys, there’s certain times in their careers, weren’t loyal to the UFC. So now they’re paying the price.”

Randy began a career as color-commentator during UFC events on FOX, but he quickly left to go to work for VIACOM on the show, “Fightmaster.” Randy was also banned from cornering his son at a UFC event earlier this year and then saw his son get cut following a second straight loss.

Tito also left the UFC with nothing positive say and signed with Bellator, but that really is to be expected considering his past with the Dana White.

Matt Hughes is currently an employee for the Ultimate Fighting Championship so his opinion on the topic could be slightly skewed in favor of all things Zuffa.
