Matt Brown vs. Robbie Lawler headlines UFC on FOX 12, winner gets title shot!

By Chris Taylor - May 27, 2014

July’s UFC on FOX 12 event will be headlined by a welterweight slugfest, as UFC officials announced today that Robbie Lawler (23-10 MMA, 8-4 UFC) will face Matt Brown (19-11 MMA, 12-5 UFC) in the evenings main event!

“Ruthless” Robbie Lawler was most recently seen in action at this past weekend’s UFC 173 event in Las Vegas, where he scored a third-round TKO victory over Jake Ellenberger. That victory got Robbie back into the win column, as he had previously lost a close five-round decision to Johny Hendricks in a championship bout for the UFC’s vacant welterweight title at March’s UFC 171 event in Dallas. Since returning to the UFC, Lawler has gone 4-1 with 3 technical knockout wins to his credit.

Meanwhile, Matt “The Immortal” Brown will be looking to build on his already impressive 7-fight UFC win streak when he faces Lawler this July. Brown most recently earned a dramatic TKO victory over Erick Silva earlier this month at the UFC Fight Night 40 event in Cincinnati. That victory earned Brown two “performance of the night” bonuses worth a cool $100k.

“The Immortal” one had lobbied for a shot at the 170-pound strap following his win over Silva, but was criticized for not having faced any of the divisions top contenders.

UFC President Dana White announced via twitter that the winner of the Brown vs. Lawler scrap will be guaranteed the next shot at current UFC welterweight champion Johny Hendricks.

UFC on FOX 12 takes place July 26 live from San Jose’s SAP Center. The main card airs live on FOX following the prelims which show on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.

UFC on FOX 12 now includes the following contests:
