MacDonald vs. Woodley Official For UFC 174 Title Eliminator

By BJPENN.COM News - April 8, 2014

Late last month we reported the UFC’s intentions with Tyron Woodley and Rory MacDonald.

Those plans have now been finalized and the two welterweight fighters will indeed square off at UFC 174 in June. The bout has also been deemed a number-one-contender clash, putting the winner up against, Johny Hendricks, the UFC’s welterweight champion.

Our very own Jim Chadwick broke down the bout in the initial report last month:

MacDonald is coming off a decision win over Demian Maia in February. Prior to that, he lost a close split-decision to the man that would go on to challenge for the welterweight belt at UFC 171, Robbie Lawler.

Woodley’s last fight was on that same card, where he defeated Carlos Condit by way of TKO, after a knee injury left Condit unable to finish out the second round. Some fans feel that Woodley didn’t beat Condit, so much as Condit lost the fight by himself. But it was Woodley’s strength that caused the injury. After all, I’m fairly sure that – had it been Jake Shields doling out the takedown, for instance – Condit would have been okay.
