Former Strikeforce middleweight kingpin Luke Rockhold has remained very vocal on his opinion surrounding the highly controversial issue of Testerone Replacement Therapy, a treatment that his opponent at UFC on FX 8 this weekend has such an exemption for. Since the Therapeutic Use Exemption was enacted last year, several fighters have gone public with their exemptions, but not without plenty of scrutiny.
The man Rockhold faces this saturday in Santa Catarina, Brazil, Vitor ‘The Phenom’ Belfort, is one of several fighters on the UFC roster with a TUE, and thus can legally use steroids to ‘battle the effects of low testosterone.’ Belfort, like most fighters with the exemption aside from Dan Henderson, have felt backlash from both fans and media in response to this idea of legally gaining unfair advantage over an opponent through means of supplements and steroids. Rockhold feels that fighters who need TRT are just missing something that they once had.
Rockhold told the media today at the UFC on FX 8 pre-fight presser, “I haven’t supplemented or taken anything in any way. I have a big heart that will push me. People that need the TRT or the extra something are lacking something and it will show in this fight.” While Belfort has maintained his position of not being ashamed of needing TRT to compete, Rockhold made made note that martial arts is a battle of the mind and that hard work is the key to success stating, “Fighting is more mental than physical. I’ve worked hard to get here. I believe in my heart and my hard work.”
