At a media scrum on Tuesday, former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre stated that it was the fact that UFC showed little support as he attempted to improve performance enhancing drug testing in the UFC that played a large part in his decision to walk away from the sport.
GSP has also made comments about the UFC being a ‘monopoly’ in which “[fighters] can’t really talk because if one says what he thinks, he will get punished.” Ironically, Georges has always gotten flak for being a bit of a robot to the company and the poster boy for the organization.
Lorenzo Fertitta, UFC CEO, was quick to respond to Georges’ comments. He took some time with Yahoo! Sports saying:
“It was extremely disappointing to hear Georges make those comments because I don’t think any organization has embraced drug testing as we have. We have not only agreed to pay when the commission has said it wants to do enhanced testing, we’ve encouraged it. We have no problem with testing. When we serve as the commission (in areas where there is no commission), we test everyone on the card so we are thorough and there can be no claims of bias.”
“Whatever a commission would want us to do in terms of testing, we would embrace it. We’ll do as many as they want. I think perhaps Georges’ people didn’t communicate to him in detail everything we’d do as they tried to arrange the testing for the fight with him and Johnny.”
Lorenzo’s statement seems to be a polished version of the comments made by UFC President Dana White (which Lorenzo kind of is anyway) which state that, “We’re tested by the government.” GSP wasn’t referring to commission testing, which has gotten a lot of criticism for not being effective. Dana White called GSP’s choice to find a third party for testing “a little weird” and once that testing fell through before GSP’s bout with Hendricks, Dana was quick to say that it “makes them both look stupid.” It seems that Georges had many more reasons for leaving than previously understood, and with everything that’s been said its easy to see why the former champ was offended.Tags: Dana White, georges st. pierre, Lorenzo Fertitta, mma, MMA NEWS, ufc, ufc news
