Last night there were reports about a potential fight between UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey and Cris “Cyborg” Santos, but although the deal was discussed nothing was ever official. Today Dana White announced that Rousey will be defending her title at UFC 157, but it will be against Alchemist Management’s Liz Carmouche.
UFC 157 will take place on February 23rd at The Honda Center in Anaheim, CA. The bout will mark the first time that any female fighters have ever competed inside the Octagon. Rousey won the Strikeforce version of the bantamweight title when she defeated Miesha Tate this past March and sucessfully defended it against former champion Sarah Kaufman in August.
Carmouche is 7-2 and has won her past two fights while competing for Invicta. Carmouche fought Marloes Coenen for the Strikeforce title in March of 2011, but after controlling the better part of the first three rounds she succumbed to a fourth round triangle choke. We recently had Carmouche as a guest on BJPenn.Com Radio and she was very vocal about wanting an opportunity to face Rousey in the UFC.
Rousey appeared on the show a short time later and said she would welcome a fight with Carmouche, but she wanted to fight Cyborg first. That fight will have to wait as Santos stated that while she could make the 135lb weight limit she would need more than two months to do so.
I have put in a request with Carmouche’s management to speak with her and when I do I will post it here on BJPenn.Com.
