Legendary Kickboxer Semmy Schilt Retires from Combat Sports

| It’s only a matter of time before our bodies tell us that we can’t do the things that we want to anymore. In today’s case it’s legendary kickboxer and former MMA competitor, Semmy Schilt, who is walking away from combat sports and declaring his retirement. Schilt will be 40 in October.

Liverkick.com is reporting that Schilt is calling it a career due to a heart condition.

Schilt is coming off of an impressive one-night performance as he claimed the GLORY HW crown in the 16-man tournament this past New Year’s Eve in Japan, taking home the 2012 Glory Heavyweight Grand Slam inaugural title. Following that event he announced that he was no longer going to be competing in the single night tournament format. He capped off that night’s performace with a final’s KO of elite heavyweight kickboxer, Daniel Ghita, in the first round via head kick. That marked his fourth win of the night and moved his overall kickboxing record to an impressive 43-6-1.

Schilt was looking to defend the Glory World Series Heavyweight Title against Gokhan Saki at some point this year, but it looks like his retirement has come before that bout could come to full fruition.

Schilt is a very tall, lanky Dutchman and was a four-time K-1 World Grand Prix champion, with tournament titles in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009 . He is widely considered the greatest heavyweight kickboxer of all time.

His MMA career preceded those kickboxing accolades as he fought in Pancrase, twice in the UFC, and has taken on such names as Fedor Emelianenko, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Josh Barnett in PRIDE.

His long frame made him a tough matchup for many kickboxing opponents as he mastered the utilization of his jab and kicks. Schilt’s storied career makes him one of the most well recognized and accomplished kickboxers of all time. We thank Semmy for all of his exciting fights in combat sports and we wish him all the best with his health and success in the future.
