King Mo Received 9-Month Suspension, $39,000 Fine From NSAC

After a highly publicized failed drug screening, Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal went in front of the Nevada State Athletic Commission today to plead his case and receive his punishment for his failed drug screening in January.

The former Strikeforce light-heavyweight champion tested positive for steroids following his January 7 win over Lorenz Larkin.

He explained to the commission that the positive test was a result of tainted supplements he purchased over the counter at a nutrition store and was unaware that the ingredients found within would result in a positive test result.

However, the commission wanted nothing to do with the argument and stated simply that every athlete is responsible for what goes into his/her body.

In the end Commissioner Pat Lundvall recommended that the punishment fit the crime and offered up terms of fine, suspension and turning his January win over Larkin’s into a no contest.

Before the verdict and punishment was delivered Mo closed with the following:

“I appreciate you letting me come and tell my side of the story, and whatever punishment you all took for me, I’m a man, and I’ll take it like a man.”

In the end the commission decided to revoke Lawal’s $15,000 win bonus and fine him an additional 30-percent of his fight purse. The total fine equals $39,000.00

In addition to the fine Mo is suspended for nine-months which starts retroactively from the January 7 date he last fought and the win over Larkins has been officially declared a no-contest.
