Keith Kizer Discusses Protocol Needed For Belfort NSAC Licensing

After showing improvements in his striking ability and diversity (evident by three straight knockouts via head kick), Vitor Belfort has seemingly positioned himself at the front of the line for the next crack at the UFC middleweight title after Anderson Silva and Chris Weidman settle their business in the octagon. However, a problem arises in that Belfort’s use of TRT may not settle so smoothly with the officials of the Nevada State Athletic Commission. ‘The Phenom’ has had no trouble securing medical exemptions in his homeland of Brazil in his last 3 outings, but many critics have voiced the sentiment that he would almost never achieve the proper license in Nevada due to testing positive for a banned substance in 2006. Dana White has expressed frustration with such suggestions, stating that Belfort is still eligible for exemption as White did not view Belfort’s TRT use as abusive. Concerning this dilemma, Keith Kizer says that while proper licensing is problematic, it is not completely barred from Belfort.

“Due to his past, Mr. Belfort would need to go before the Commission if he applies for a TRT TUE. This is not anything new. (For example, I would not administratively grant Antonio Margarito a contestant’s license so he had to appear before the full Commission — likewise, Dave Herman.)”

Kizer also says that while a license to fight is not impossible for the Brazilian, the decision would be made by five NSAC commissioners.

“The Commissioners could grant (with or without condition), deny, or take other action on any such application.”

Only time will tell if Belfort will be able to fight for the title in Nevada. However, should Silva emerge victorious in his rematch with Weidman, perhaps the UFC would favor a Belfort/Silva rematch in Brazil.
