In the interview above, former UFC heavyweight champion Josh Barnett spoke about this Saturday’s main event fight at UFC on Fuel TV 10, a heavyweight match between Fabricio Werdum and ‘Big Nog,’ Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. For Barnett, Saturday’s fight will see an older fighter on the decline taking on a rising star with newfound confidence in his striking.
“Nogueira’s biggest problem is that he has lived on his chin. There are a lot of fighters who are built that way, they just take shots, take shots and take shots and eventually come back on their opponents, either because they are tired or taken four and given the one that counts. He can’t do that anymore. He’s punched out. Nogueira is very knockout-able guy. I’ve seen him take some good shots, but at the same time I’ve just seen him get clipped and he’s done.”
Barnett (32-6) has faced Nogueira twice before in 2006, with each fighter taking one of the decisions. In his days fighting for Pride FC, Nogueira was one of the more indestructible fighters in the game. Since then, however, he has tasted two T/KO’s in the Octagon at the hands of Frank Mir and Cain Velasquez. He also suffered a broken arm from a Kimura in his last fight with Mir. Nogueira has rebounded from those losses with a recent submission win over Dave Herman at UFC 153.
Nogueira’s opponent, Fabricio Werdum, is coming into this fight with significant momentum. In his first fight in the UFC since leaving and fighting in Strikeforce, Werdum won a unanimous decision over tough veteran, Roy Nelson. He then won a TKO over Mike Russow, a fighter who is difficult to knock out.
Said Barnett of this recent success in the striking game, particularly given the fact htat Werdum is known for his jiu jitsu game, “Werdum has been feeling pretty froggy with his striking as of late. And he’s 6’5,” so I expect that big ‘ole goofus to come in there and [makes explosion sounds] probably just plow through him. That’s really going to be the difference in this match.”
