Jorge Masvidal ‘Dying to get his hands on a ranked fighter like Bobby Green’

August 8, 2014 4:17 pm by Jake Chastain Radio recently sat down to interview UFC lightweight contender Jorge Masvidal this past weekend. Masvidal is currently riding a 2-fight winning streak after recently defeating Daron Cruickshank at on July 26th at UFC on FOX: Lawler vs. Brown.  Masvidal is now scheduled for a quick turnaround and will take on #7 ranked Bobby Green, who is on an eight fight winning streak, on September 27th at UFC 178.

Masvidal, who is currently on the lightweight rise and is gunning for UFC title shot in the near future, spoke about his quick turnaround and his upcoming bout with Bobby Green. Here are some of the highlights from Masvidal’s interview with Radio: (Airs weekly, Sunday Nights on BJPENN.COM)

Masvidal on the quick fight turnaround following his win over Cruickshank just a couple of weeks ago:

“For me, it’s an automatic yes. If it wasn’t for injuries and things like that I would compete as many times as I could in a year, and skip out on practice and let competition be my practice. Practice is cool and everything but I like competing that’s what I like to do; stepping in that cage and getting that work, you know?”

“The fight [scheduling] to me was the best thing ever because when I get a long time in between [fights] I gain a lot of weight and, it’s just my eating habits. As soon as they told me I was happy, ready to go, man. I think they told me on Tuesday and I was already at like 185. I was at a pizza place and I was like, ‘man, good thing they told me before I finished these last two slices.’”

Masvidal then went on to discuss his upcoming opponent, #7 ranked Bobby Green, who just defeated Josh Thomson at UFC on FOX: Lawler vs. Brown:

“I love it, man. I love it. As long as I got a body in front of me…plus he’s ranked. I’ve been dying to get my hands on one of these ranked dudes, so, time to get to work.”

Masvidal on the stylistic matchup with Green:

“Bobby is the type of guy that when you hit him in the mouth he’s going to turn up. I’m the same type of dude; when you hit me I’m coming after you. So, you know, maybe it starts calm and we both feeling out each other because he’s a slow starter too but as soon as one of us cracks the other it’s going to get poppin’ and, you know, my hand is going to get raised.”

“I don’t ever game plan for fights. I don’t watch tape on opponents, I just prepare me. I just worry about me. I just get myself in shape and I don’t care what they’re doing, I just know what I’m doing.”

Masvidal also touched on the impact of his ranking in the UFC lightweight division, which currently stands at #14. Masvidal explained:

“In all honesty, the ranking itself doesn’t bother me. I want to hold the belt and that’s what bothers me. But the rankings do affect my paycheck; they affect my sponsorship in a big way, so obviously they having a certain number by your name means more income coming in.”

“All I ask is give me the toughest guys out there and let God take care of the rest.”

UFC 178 goes down on September 27th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Stay posted to MMA News for all the updates and build-up leading into this late summer fight night.
