Bellator’s new reality television series, ‘Fight Master,’ has suffered a major hitch in its finale scheduled for this Saturday at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut as competitor Joe Riggs has pulled out with an injury.
Three weeks ago during training, Riggs detached his retina and suffered a partial fracture to his orbital bone.
“My sparring partner threw a high kick and I blocked it, but his toe went through my head gear. I was in horrible pain and they had to pry my eye open to see the damage.”
Riggs, the most experienced and favored fighter coming into the show, competed alongside 31 other fighters for a $100,000 prize and a spot in Bellator’s welterweight tournament. The finale was set for Saturday, September 7, and Riggs would be facing Mike Bronzoulis. Now, the bout will be rescheduled depending on Riggs’ recovery, Bellator’s Director of Public Relations, Anthony Mazzuca, told SI.com in an email.
Riggs has said he could be ready to fight in October, or on Bellator’s November 2 card. The November card will be Bellator’s first pay-per-view event, which will feature former UFC light heavyweight champions, Tito Ortiz and Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson, facing off at the Long Beach Arena in Long Beach, CA. Also on the card will be three title fights including the rematch between lightweight champion, Michael Chandler, and Eddie Alvarez in his return to Bellator.Tags: Bellator, bellator fight master, bellator mma: fight master, Fight Master, joe diesel riggs, Joe Riggs, mike bronzoulis, mma, MMA NEWS, quinton "rampage" jackson, rampage jackson, tito ortiz
