The UFC recently announced the first ever all female cast of The Ultimate Fighter featuring the new women’s straw weight division. The winner of the season would go on the become the first ever UFC straw weight champion. However, Jessica Aguilar of WSOF (World Series of Fighting) voiced her opinion that no matter who wins the season, she is still the number 1 straw weight in the world.
Her recent demolition of former WSOF straw weight champ Alida Gray proved even further that Aguilar is at the top of her weight class, and in a recent interview with MMAfighting.com’s Guilherme Cruz she voiced how she doesn’t think she is among the best, but in fact is the best.
“I don’t think I am the best, I am the best,” she said. “I beat the best in the world. (Carla Esparza) can have the No. 2 spot, she can have her UFC belt, whatever she wants. I don’t even think she’s going to get it, I think Claudia (Gadelha) is going to beat her, but that’s another conversation. I don’t think I am the best, I am the best.”
The female straw weights that have recently been introduced to the UFC have all come from Invicta FC in which Carla Esparza was the champion. However, Aguilar defeated Esparza back in 2011 making it a hard pill to swallow for her to believe Esparza the best in the division.
“I’m very humble, but I think I need to start talking the truth. I put a lot of hard work and dedicate a lot of time to be where I am today. This is my title. I am the No. 1 strawweight in the world. It doesn’t matter if someone has the UFC belt, but they don’t have the best in the world. The best in the world right now is with WSOF.”
We can most likely expect to see Aguilar in the UFC’s newest division sometime in the near future. However, Aguilar stated that that’s where her sights are set at the moment, and she is content with her current employment with WSOF.
“I have a contract here and I believe I’m in the right place right now,” she said. “Everything happens for a reason. Later, in the future, when I win more fights, we’ll see what happens. But now I’m very happy with the WSOF, and very happy for those that the UFC has given an opportunity. It’s a great thing. But I’m going to continue winning and proving why I’m the No. 1 strawweight in the world and then we’ll see what happens.”
Although her dedication the WSOF is admirable, the sheer fact of the matter is, if she doesn’t come to the UFC it will be hard for anyone to believe that she is in fact the number 1 straw weight. If you’re not fighting the best and beating the best you just simply aren’t the best, and that’s just the way it is.Tags: carla esparza, Jessica Aguilar, ufc news, wsof
