Jacob Volkmann discussed the snapping of his 5-fight win streak last weekend at UFC 146 with Jens and Abel Pulver. Volkmann has also been making headlines about his anti-Obama statements. After his bout at UFC 125 said that he wanted to fight U.S. President Barack Obama because he disagreed with his policies and asserting, “Someone needs to knock some sense into that idiot.” That statement resulted in a visit from the US Secret Service the following week. Volkmann has appeared on several national news shows for the comments, including The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Inside Edition, and Fox Business Network. He again made waves calling out U.S. President Barack Obama after UFC on Versus 5 stating, “Obama needs a glassectomy…It’s where they remove the belly button and put a piece of glass in there, so you can see what you’re doing while your head’s up your ass.”
Jens Pulver: What gives you those political views? Are you using fighting – not u sing fighting – is that something that you see going in a different direction? Is that something you see later on – taking the intellectual side of MMA and going out there and pummeling into the political world?
“That wasn’t my goal initially but I was just so irritated with it after my Antonio McKee’s fight. I was just so initially irritated with Obama I just went off on him on camera. It was just something in the back of my mind and I decided to voice it. Obviously, there’s a lot of fans that hate it when fighters or athletes bring up politics. They don’t think athletes are smart enough to talk about politics or anything intellectual but I got 10 years of school behind me. I own my own business. I’m pretty sure I know enough to say what I want.”
Jens Pulver: What’s going on in your head after that fight? How are you going to rebound? Are you getting back to gym right off the bat? Are you going to take some time to recollect? What’s going on in your mind as far as you next steps?
“For the next steps I got to restart training. I went for a run this morning to let off some steam. There’s really not that much to say. I got to get back in there…”
Abel Pulver: You were on a 5 fight win streak coming into that fight. Obviously, no reason to hang you head down over about one loss. Looking back at the fight, what do you think went wrong? Is there a technical aspect? Maybe you just didn’t prepare? Obviously, he’s a triangle specialist – he seems really good at that move…. What do you think went wrong for you in that fight?
“What I know went wrong, I was in his guard, he got my right arm – my elbow out to the side – I should’ve kept my elbows in. He got his leg over my shoulder – that’s where it went wrong. I was practicing all camp keeping my elbows in not letting him my elbows out – and he did.”
Abel Pulver: I read a couple of interviews before the fight and I know you had said you didn’t know the UFC was in love with your style completely – they said main card fighters finish guys. I don’t think that’s true. I have no problem with your style. You’re a 3x All American Wrestler at the University of Minnesota…. Do you think you almost incepted yourself because after the fight Dana said ‘no you’re not cut, you’re not released’ Did that play at all on your mind going into the fight?
“No, I was actually fairly comfortable in that fight. I didn’t feel endangered at all. I just made that one mistake and he capitalized on it. I actually felt pretty comfortable on my feet and when he was trying to take me down and pulled me to his guard I was like – fine I’ll go to the ground. I’m not to worried about his ground game. There’s no reason for the loss except I made a mistake. I wasn’t anticipating the loss. Is that what you were trying to say?”
