We are almost five months into the year and we have seen several fight cards altered due to injuries. It has been nowhere near as bad as 2013 was, but it may be time for some fighters to re-evaluate how hard they train.

Khabib Nurmagomedov’s recent leg injury brought up the discussion of how the wrestling mindset can actually cause injuries. UFC Tonight’s Kenny Florian dove into the subject, “I think it’s the mentality of the wrestlers that gets them injured. They push through things and when they have small injuries, they get worse and worse. It’s the physical side. But people forget how new this sport is. This sport is tough. Look at the training you have to do.”

While Florian thought some training camps could use improvement on their methods, UFC middleweight Michael Bisping responded by saying that these fighters should either train hard just like you would fight. “But you have to train the way you’re going to fight. If you don’t to push yourself to the limit like you would in the fight you won’t be ready. But you have to be smart. It’s an unfortunate business. Sometimes this happens.”

Both fighters have a point. When you train hard like Khabib Nurmagomedov does, you run the risk of getting injured. However, when you have an MMA record like his it’s hard to mess with the recipe.
