Gabriel Gonzaga: “I Want To Be UFC Champion”

November 28, 2013 7:27 am by Derek Langhorn

Gabriel Gonzaga, who once scored one of the most surprising knockouts in UFC history, a headkick knockout against feared striker Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, is now gunning for a UFC title.

Gonzaga was released from the UFC roster in 2010 after a unanimous decision loss to Brendan Schaub, but got another chance after scoring an arm triangle choke against Parker Porter. Since then, he has gone 4-1 in the UFC promotion, only dropping a fight to Travis Browne.

Now, Stipe Miocic has called out Gonzaga, and Gonzaga doesn’t know why. “I really don’t know why he called me out. He’s above me in the rankings and asked to fight me, Gonzaga told “Either he’s scared to fight someone else or he believes I’m an easy win for him. … He’s wrong.”

Miocic will now fight Gonzaga at UFC on Fox 10 on Jan. 25.

Gonzaga believes that he is the more well-rounded fighter, and feels that he can beat Miocic wherever the fight takes him.

“I try my best to be the most well-rounded fighter I can be to fight anyone, and I believe our styles matches perfectly. Jiu-jitsu is always an option, but there’s no Gi in MMA, so I always have to use my boxing and muay thai to open some spaces,” Gonzaga said. “I have way more experience in every aspect of the game, not only jiu-jitsu.”

Gonzaga has been on a roll since returning to the UFC Octagon, and said “I wasn’t sure what did I want in the past, but now I know that I want to be the UFC champion.”

“I believe I can beat anyone, but you have to have some luck when the time comes. I lost to Randy Couture because of an accident during the fight, and I believe things could have been different if I had better luck,” he said.

Gonzaga even believes he can defeat the current champion Cain Velasquez, who has seemed unstoppable since his knockout defeat to Junior “Cigano” Dos Santos.

“[Velasquez] is a tough fighter, but everybody looks up to the champion and studies his games. He has some flaws in his game, and I’d need to be ready for this fight,” Gonzaga said.
