The big boss, Lorenzo Fertitta confirmed yesterday that the UFC is working on putting together a heavyweight clash between two former champions.
Former two-time heavyweight champion, Frank Mir will bring a three-fight win streak into the matchup. After picking up a loss to Shane Carwin back in 2010 he went on to defeat Mirko Cro Cop via knockout, than took out Roy Nelson in the months after. In his most recent outing he put on an almost troubling display against MMA legend, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 140 where he submitted the Brazilian with a kimura and broke his arm in front of the live pay-per-view audience.
Velasquez came into the sport as the “next big thing”. With loads of hype surrounding the AKA heavyweight he rose to the height of the sport, winning the UFC’s heavyweight title against Brock Lesnar in 2010 and keeping his undefeated record intact. The undefeated heavyweight went on to headline the first ever UFC on FOX event last year where he lost his title in his first defense to Junior Dos Santos.
Again, a date has yet to be determined for this proposed heavyweight matchup but when details emerge will we run an update.
