Rousimar Palhares is coming off of a victory over Steve Carl after landing a heel hook submission last Saturday (March 29, 2014), to claim the World Series of Fighting (WSOF) Welterweight title.
Prior to Palhares’s and Carl’s meeting, it was already decided that the winner of the bout would face former No. 1 UFC Welterweight contender Jon Fitch at WSOF 11 on July 5, 2014.
However, not long after Palhares was able to secure the victory, and the WSOF welterweight title, Fitch took to Twitter to announce that he, “Agreed to fight in June. No later”.
Therefore, it’s fair to assume that Jon has plans of being on the WSOF 10 card, scheduled for June 14 instead.
What’s in question, however, is the fact that Jon stated that he would pass up on a chance to fight Palhares due to his reputation of not always playing by the rules. With that being said, we are still left in the dark a little bit on why Jon is in such a rush to get back to action.
Fitch, who was released from the UFC after his loss to Demian Maia at UFC 156, could very well just be hyping up the bout and puffing his chest for better ratings. That remains to be seen.
Regardless, the card for WSOF 11 looks to be a great one: With WSOF boasting on their Twitter that Fitch vs. Palhares is the main event, followed by Nick Newell vs. Justin Gaethje as the co-main event, along with Tyrone Spong returning to action (Spong’s opponent has yet to be announced).
