Georges St. Pierre’s trainer Firas Zahabi, the head coach of St. Pierre’s home training center, the Tristar Gym, believes that round five was the deciding factor in St. Pierre’s controversial split decision victory over Johny Hendricks.
“Georges was more active in round five,” Zahabi told MMAjunkie. “He got two takedowns and landed more strikes.”
“I thought we won. I thought Georges won [rounds] one, three and five. That’s why I put Georges on my shoulders. If I didn’t think he won, I wouldn’t have done that,” Zahabi said.
Although Zahabi declined to comment on recent TMZ rumors about St. Pierre’s “personal problems”, including an unplanned pregnancy and a family illness, he did say that “Georges has been having mixed feelings for a long time now. He has his own personal issues that I can’t comment on, and he lives a certain lifestyle.”
St. Pierre has talked about taking a leave of absence from the sport, and Zahabi said “He lives like a soldier. Every day is centered around training; he doesn’t have a well balanced life at all. His entire life is centered around performance, and he’s 32 now. He’s got to decide if he wants to live a life, maybe try to balance his life and have a regular routine, or does he have motivation to continue doing this fight style. That’s really up to him. I don’t think anybody can answer that but him.”
“Right now, he’s just resting. Georges doesn’t like to think so far ahead after a fight. It’s very emotional during the fight and after the fight,” Zahabi said. “You’ve got to let the storm settle, and you’ve got more of a clear head. When I think he has a more clear head, he’ll make a more serious decision.”
St. Pierre broke BJ Penn’s record of longest amount of time spent in the octagon in his title fight, and Zahabi believes that may have played a part in his decision to step away.
“Nobody has put in more hours and more time in the octagon than him. Nobody’s had more minutes; he set the record,” he said. “How can I tell him that he didn’t do enough? I don’t think it’s my place to tell him anything. It’s his own personal choice.”
