Michael Bisping is looking at another four to six month absence from the UFC due to complications from a detached retina.

Following a Technical Decision victory over Alan Belcher at UFC 159, Michael Bisping underwent surgery to correct a detached retina suffered during the fight.  The surgery delayed his return to action until at least October, when the British fighter was set to face Mark Munoz in the headline fight of UFC Fight Night 30.

Now, due to more complications with the same eye, Bisping was forced to have another corrective surgery last week.  Lyoto Machida has stepped in to replace Bisping, and the former UFC light heavyweight champion from Brazil will be making his first middleweight appearance in the UFC.

Bisping’s management team, Paradigm Sports Management, told Bleacher Report that the fighter had the surgery on Thursday.  He is expected to have no contact for the next three months, and Bisping will hopefully have a return to full sparring and a fight in four to six months.

With the middleweight division undergoing a number of changes (ie the dethroning of long-time champion Anderson Silva, Lyoto Machida’s entrance to the division, etc.), a full year out of competition will set Bisping back considerably.  The long-time top ten fighter will be looking at a tough road back to title contention, and it all starts with resting and getting healthy.
