BJPenn.Com would like to welcome The Ultimate Fighter contestant Joey “Boom Boom” Rivera to the site. The Tuscon, AZ native will begin blogging weekly about his time in the house and his overall thoughts on the other fighters and the show.
Rivera is coming off a huge victory over Shane Carwin’s number one pick Sam Alvey via majority decision on last week’s episode of TUF.
I knew I wanted to be a fighter because of one very simple reason; my mother and her boyfriend would get into fights and I wanted to be able to protect her. I never knew I’d wind up where I am today.
I am a big fan of the martial arts and when I am not training I study the different martial arts by reading books or watching videos, I am an eternal student. While fighting is a huge part of my life it’s not my only interest. I love spending time with my family and friends. When I don’t have a fight coming up I take tango lessons with my wife.
My professional record is 7-1 and I have competed for organizations like Cage Fury Fighting Championships in Atlantic City, NJ, World Fighting Federation in Tuscon, AZ, King of the Cage, Full Moon Fighting and Desert Rage Full Contact Fighting.
APEX Mixed Martial Arts in Tucson is my home base and I also happen to own the gym. We have some real killers training there including Ed West, George Roop, Eddie Arizmendi, Chad Griggs, Drew Fickett, Lyle Steffens and “War Monkey” Parker. Continue reading on page 2…
When the coaches were brought in I initially didn’t have a preference, Shane Carwin seemed like he was the more organized of the two. He brought a more complete coaching staff to work with their team every day.
Life in the house is definitely not like my life at home. We have no TV, radio, internet, books or magazines. There is absolutely no communication with the outside world. I think it’s kind of like how it would be in jail, except you don’t get a phone call or any visitors. The food is great though. I got everything I wanted. Eating is probably one of my favorite things to do while living in the TUF house.
In general, everyone was really cool with me before and after the fight, including Sam. Right before the fight everyone was really nice. It seemed like all the guys felt like my chances of beating Sam were pretty small. After I won the fight, everyone was very surprised.
After the fight, I was not surprised that I won. I know what I am capable of. It did feel great though, to defeat the #1 pick on the show. I was one step closer to being where I want to be, and my work isn’t close to being done.Tags: featured, Joey "Boom Boom" Rivera, Roy Nelson, Sam Alvey, SHANE CARWIN, The Ultimate Fighter
