Out of all of the insane action from UFC 166, one of the more memorable fights was between Tim Boetsch and CB Dollaway. Boetsch, who walked away with the win, had two, almost successive, eye pokes to the right eye, made for a very squeamish and tense moment mid-fight. As always, these events always spring forth the debate about the nature of eye pokes occurring during fights and how best to solve it. With the sort of gloves that are used in the sport, it seems almost inevitable for a finger to slip through at some point. Well, as you could imagine, Tim Boetsch was asked in a recent radio interview about the condition of his eye following the fight and about how he felt about Dollaway, taking points away, and whether it should be regulated.
“I think it’s part of the game, but it is up to each individual fighter. Like I said before, when you throw a jab and you’re intending to hit somebody your fingers are not extended. I’ve never thrown a jab thinking I’m going to hit somebody with my fingers poking out. I think it’s part of the game, but it is up to each individual fighter.”
“When I fought Philippou that’s why I was really ticked off about that eye poke, they were saying that they weren’t sure if it was intentional or not. Here we were talking about a professional level boxer, you know? You make fists. When you throw a punch, you make fists. When you poke someone in the eye, your fingers are extended. It’s that type of thing that really bugs me.”
And on whether he thought the point being taken from Dollaway was surprising:
“I think because he poked me again right away they were really trying to send a message that if you’re throwing your hand out, whether it’s a jab or whatever, you can’t have those fingers extended and because he did it again right away after the ref told him to be mindful of that, the ref was trying to set the standard for the night that they weren’t gonna take any crap.”
“I think the ref did exactly the right thing. You get one freebie and anything after that is points being deducted.”Tags: mma, MMA NEWS, tim boetsch, ufc, ufc news
