EXCLUSIVE – ProElite II: Evan Cutts – “I respect Reagan for being Reagan and not his name”

November 4, 2011 4:27 pm by Pedro Carrasco

At 6’1, 178lbs, Evan Cutts is currently undefeated in pro MMA at 2-0, and while he may not be known to mainstream MMA fans, he’s been making waves on the local circuit during his young MMA career. As an amateur, the 20yr old Cutts was named “Amateur Fighter of the Year” on ESPN.go.com’s list for “Best of Dallas Forth Worth MMA in 2010″. Cutts last fought this past June where he defeated Derrick San Miguel by guillotine choke in the second round. Consequently, both of Cutts wins have come by way of submission, as well as 3 of his 4 amateur wins.

Cutts finds himself on the eve of a great opportunity, but a tall order when he meets Reagan Penn tomorrow night, as Penn will certainly be looking to make another statement when he steps back into the cage for Pro Elite II.

Cutts recently sat down with BJPENN.COM to discuss his ProElite debut against Reagan and this is what he had to say: (FULL UNEDITED AUDIO WITH ADDITIONAL MATERIAL AT THE END OF THE ENTRY)

“They make me feel like a rock star [at ProElite], its only my third fight and I know it’s only Reagan’s second but it’s really cool to sit next to guys like Andrei Arlovski and Jeremy Horn and guys that just have a ton of fights.

I think Reagan and I are the only ones that aren’t heavyweights fighting on the televised card. It’s like big guy, big guy big guy, than me and big guy, big guy, big guy. It’s definitely a cool feeling and a definite feeling of being blessed and I’m gracious I’m on the card.”

He continued…

“I’m from Texas, I’m a Texas boy, I was born in Ft. Worth, I train in Ft. Worth… I’m a free style fighter, you do your best to be balanced, a lot of my wins are by submission, but I think a lot of that is that when you train Jiu Jitsu and you train wrestling you’re able to train at 100% everyday and your body doesn’t get banged up.

A lot of the guys who train a ton of kickboxing of boxing get pretty banged up and it’s nice to not have to wear a knee brace when I go and train and not having ice on me every night.

But ya, I come from a free style background, I trained a lot of boxing for this fight because obviously the Penn’s have a good ground game, they are good everywhere, but obviously Jiu Jitsu is one of Reagan’s strong suits.”

On what he thinks about fighting a Penn:

“It’s an honor. I know this fight’s about Reagan, but when I first started getting into MMA, BJ Penn’s “The Book of Knowledge” was something I used to read a lot. When I heard I was going to be fighting Reagan Penn I was just really excited and really thankful. I’ve been doing a lot of praying and trying to get Christ as the center focus of my life and this coming up throws me an answer.

It’s turning into a job, but with that being said, I don’t ever want to look at it as a job, and I always want to be excited about the sport because it’s a privilege. I never want to lose my sense of wonder.

I respect Reagan for being another fighter. Obviously his name carries a lot of weight, but I don’t think he wants people to respect him just because he’s a Penn. If I were Reagan I would want people to respect me because I’m Reagan and not because of who’s my older brother.

I want Reagan to know that I respect him because he is Reagan and not because of the name. I respect him as another man fighting.”

On what fans can expect from him tomorrow night:

“I’m going to bring a fight; Reagan knows I’m not going to lay down into an arm bar for him. I’m going to fight and I’m going to fight hard. Both me and Reagan are going to do our best to win by whatever way presents itself.”
