Phil “The New York Badass” Baroni has fought in Pride FC where he holds a record of 4–2–0. Phil also holds a record in the UFC of 3–7–0. He has a reputation for his boxing ability, knockout power and Pro wrestling style walk ins. Phil is an accomplished wrestler known for his trash talking before fights. “The New York Badass” recently talked to Jens and Abel Pulver 0n the Just Scrap Radio Episode 5 letting us know what’s on his mind.
Q: What have you been up to?
“I’m living the dream. I’m over at AKA, training for a fight on June 2nd and I might be taking a fight real quick after that.
I have to get my manager on the mic because I might be taking a fight a couple weeks after that too. I’m just coming off an injury and I want to get the ball rolling after last year.”
Q: Sounds like you’re trying to stay busy are that something you want to do when you’re obviously in the UFC where you can only fight when they tell you to? Is this one of those things where you have to be busier? Or do you like having 2-3 months off between fights?
“I need to stay busy, being back in the UFC on the first one, I fought in the UFC 8 times. For 5 years, I only had 8 fights. So I need to stay busy, when I was fighting in PRIDE Bushido, I had 6 fights in 9 or 10 months. I did a lot better staying active and fighting often.
I’m 36 years old, I just want to fight as often as possible, and go out with a few wins. I know I don’t have much time left but I want to make the most of the time I do have left, and knock some dudes out, and correct some stuff that didn’t go my way in the past. I want to go out with a vengeance so to say.”
Q: What fight stands out in Phil Baroni’s mind as the one he wants to be remembered for so far in his career?
“Well I think my comeback will be incredible because I’ve lost some fights in the UFC and that sent me packing it was like ‘see ya later alligator’. Everyone blows me off, but I’ve beat a couple of legitimate guys.
I’ve had guys bringing me up to beat, thinking I was some washed up bum, but I flipped the switch on them, knocked them out, and got a couple wins…. but if I had to name one, I want it to be a future fight.”
Q: What is pushing and driving you? What motivates you to get up and train?
“I need to accomplish my goal. Some people call it excuses, but I have reasons, I don’t have to come out mumbling “I have a cracked skull” after a fight or some bullshit like that and make excuses about why I didn’t win the fight. But I have some reasons, some things that needed fixing. When you’re in the gym, I’m in the gym with some of the best guys in the world, and your mourning, and there’s something wrong with them, you can see it translating into the fight.
But I think I still have a lot in the tank, and still can go with the best of them. I’ve made some bad decisions, some dumb mistakes, took some fights probably when I shouldn’t have. When we’re coming up, we just take the fight because we’re lucky to get it. Anytime, anyone, any place, you’ll take the fight, with less business as it is now, you’ll just take the fight with pride and honor. You gotta find a way to win. I just feel like I can still fight, I’m still hungry for it. I have stuff to prove. I have something to prove to everybody. Just like when I was coming up, that chip is still on my shoulder. I just want to prove it to everyone and to myself. I want to prove to myself that I still can fight.
Q: What are your major focus points right now? What are you doing to your game?”
“I’ve been mixing it up. Cardio is always good, not everyone can be a tour de france champion, or run in the Olympics. But I think a lot of this is genetic, I hit a lot harder than everybody else, and I can take a shot a lot better than other people can. It’s not because I chew a lot of bubble gum, I just happen to be born that way. I don’t know what it is, maybe my blood caries a lot less oxygen. I mean, I train alongside the best. But I think I just have to train a lot harder, use my god given abilities, and try not to gas out in the first round.
I have to pace myself a little better, I have to fight smarter, I’m older and I’ve got a little experience. I can use my past, recognize my weaknesses, and use them too. Like, for a guy with no chin, he’s gonna try his hardest not to get hit. I’m gonna have to slow the pace down with these kids and come out like a bat in the alley, guns blazing and try to knock everybody out. When I was a kid, I thought I was the next Mike Tyson, knocking everybody out in the first round. But in MMA, its different, you can clinch guys up, or take it to the ground. You can avoid getting knocked out if you don’t wanna get knocked out.
But now I’m smarter, I’ve grown, I realize my strength, and my weaknesses, but I gotta fight around them and according to what they are. I’m not Demian Maia going out there to jump guard and flying triangle some dude. I’m not gonna out gas someone like Clay Guida and come out like an idiot for 5 rounds either. I have to pick my shots be more economical with my punches. Use my wrestling. Everyone knows I can wrestle, but the haven’t seen it in 12, 15 years. I just have to fight smart. I have some things to work on. I know whats gotta be done, I just gotta do it.”
