| This past Sunday our boys over at Fist-Ta-Cuff Radio welcomed on a member of one of the most well know jiu-jitsu families on the planet, Rener Gracie. The last time Rener he talked about taking the reins of the Gracie family business and taking it to the next level. This time he touched on the topics of the current state of BJJ inside its own sport and also inside the sport of MMA. He also talked about the upcoming Metamoris 2 card, a jiu-jitsu tournament that will host some of the biggest names and most skilled practitioners in the sports today. Here are some of the highlights form that interview:

First, Rener touched on the upcoming Metamoris 2 jiu-jitsu event, which is now three weeks away:

“We’re super pumped. The first one was such a huge success in the jiu-jitsu community that my brother Ralek had no choice but to keep that train moving and that was definitely his brain child and his vision and I’m just honored to be a part of it and helping him out with that and continue pushing that because I think it’s really giving people a chance to see the essence and simple beauty of jiu-jitsu kind of in its original form and I think that’s kind of cool.”

On the changing of how people train because of point fighting in jiu-jitsu:

“That’s my concern for jiu-jitsu, is that people literally are becoming point-based trainees, 100% for jiu-jitsu.”

“I’ve never taught a class where I said, ‘ok guys, here’s the takedown, we’re gonna get your two points. Then you’re going to pass the guard and get your three points and then you’re going to mount and get your four points and then you’re going to hold him here until time runs out because by then half of the clock has been run and we’ll hold him down and win the fight based on that many of points…that number of points.”

“It becomes a little bit sad because in a real fight, which is really at the core of all of this…the street applicability…your opponent is not going to care about points, there will be no judges, there will be no time limit and no one is really going to care. So, it kind of pulls us away from the real reason why we all fell in love with jiu-jitsu to begin with.”

On point fighting in MMA and why fans should not be upset with it:

“There is no doubt that GSP is pound-for-pound one of the best in the world. Nobody will doubt that at MMA. But, you know, he goes in there and doesn’t actually WIN the fight…he doesn’t actually submit or knock anybody out, yet he’s pound-for-pound one of the top three fighters in the world in MMA. I have nothing against that. I think its genius. I think he’s one of the best players of ‘the game’ of MMA, ‘the sport of MMA’. He does it perfectly. There’s nothing I would change about how he does it, you see what I’m saying? So I’m not condemning him at all. I’m just saying that the circumstances of the sport, like the sport of BJJ, are dictating the training in the gym.”

“He’s playing it perfectly. But there’s no doubt he’s only doing that because it’s the rules of the game. You see what I’m saying? So we can’t judge him at all. We can only praise the fact that, above everyone else, he’s figured out the science of the game and is applying his knowledge to retain the championship and make loads of money while he’s doing it.”

“He’s a good example of how the rules of the final encounter are dictating the training in the gym.”

“No one is to blame but the circumstances.”
