When Nate Diaz joined BJPENN.COM Radio for a special one hour broadcast on Thursday afternoon, April 25, 2013, he had a few things on his mind, to put it mildly. Coming off of a TKO loss to Josh Thomson at UFC on FOX 7, Diaz felt that he had held his tongue for too long and needed to get a few things off his chest.
In his last fight before meeting with the Strikeforce veteran, Diaz challenged Benson Henderson for the lightweight title at UFC on FOX 5 back in December. Though he was unsuccessful, Diaz put forth a courageous performance and never once backed down fro the champion.
Though Diaz has admitted that he has respect for the fighting skills of the reigning 155-pound king, he was less than adamant about his personality as a whole.
“I’m going to say something about Ben Henderson: he’s a fucking weirdo, dude. He’s a strange guy. His fights aren’t very entertaining as far as I’m concerned, and he does good; he accomplishes his mission and he gets the job done. Let me tell you about that guy though, that motherfucker is not afraid” Diaz told hosts George Matthews and Pedro Carrasco.
“Henderson, he’s a strange guy, but that guy when I fought him he was serious. He wasn’t afraid, he was there to get his job done and do what he had to do, and I could actually respect that, you know?”
Though he came up short in his first attempt to capture lightweight gold, Diaz felt differently about the performance of his teammate and fellow member of the “Skrap Pack” Gilbert Melendez. The last Strikeforce lightweight champion, Melendez was often referred to as one of the best lightweights in the world despite residing outside of the Octagon, and Diaz believes in his bout with Henderson on the same UFC on FOX card that “El Nino” did more than enough to earn a victory.
“As a matter of fact, I think [Henderson] lost to Gilbert Melendez, you know? I don’t know what happened there, everybody saw the fight, I think Gilbert is the lightweight champion of the UFC. I don’t know how they just lied to everybody and said that Henderson won that fight, so that was strange, too.”
Apparently, everything involving Henderson is strange nowadays, especially when you take into account that he supposedly fought Diaz last December with a toothpick in his mouth for the duration of the fight.
