Exclusive (Part 2) | Who’s The Best Poker Player In MMA? Buffer Breaks It Down | Late Night Cageside Radio

Back when Bruce Buffer decided to become the full-time UFC announcer was way before the UFC was bringing in millions upon millions of dollars each month. When Bruce made the decision to take a chance on a sport he had grown to love, it wasn’t something he was doing for the money. The book goes way into detail but Bruce did share a bit of the story for the fans of Late Night Cageside.

“I basically managed a fighter named Scott “the pit-bull  Ferrozzo, I wanted to be in the octagon, I knew it was for me I talked to my brother and said I wanted to be an announcer, boxing wasn’t what I wanted to get into. So I thought you know something is going to come along, I originally got my brother in the UFC and arranged for him a three-fight deal, we had issues with WCW at the time which was huge, the wrestling league but basically it was time for no more UFC. I called Michael and then I called the owners and said look you need a Buffer in the octagon. I’m in the entertainment business I got contacts I’ll help you build this sport, I want to make this sport huge.” Said Buffer. “I can relate to everything about it I think it is the next big thing to come and will be for years and years. So basically that fell on deaf ears so then I thought how could I do this? Ferrozzo became my client we flew down to UFC 8. I told the owner look I’m coming down with my fighter I’m bringing my tux, let me get in the octagon for the prelims. He agreed I did the prelims and they thought I did a good job.”

The UFC went on to hire another guy and then he didn’t work out, so then Bruce did UFC 10. The UFC hired another guy and that didn’t work out. Finally Bruce talked to them again and said “look I feel like a girl waiting on a prom date. Let me do my part in building the best sport in the world, I got the marketing ability, and that was the best poker hand I ever played. I have done every show since except for two in 17 years.”

If you ask Bruce Buffer if he has a favorite fighter or a favorite fight to watch you will not get a straight answer, and rightfully so. He has seen so many fights, is friends with so many fighters that he would not, or could not pick one. He will tell you he has huge respect for Randy Couture though.

“I will tell you I think the greatest role model no matter what comes out of him afterwards but the person who I did the Buffer Bow to as the fans kindly called it, is Randy Couture. Randy Couture to me, inside and outside the octagon, I don’t care what we read lately the issues with him and the UFC is business that’s not of our concern its between them. Randy has always been a true gentlemen to me and a friend.”

Another fighter we all know well that Bruce Buffer talks about in his book and has nothing but kind words for is BJ Penn. Bruce said he has a partial chapter dedicated to BJ his family and his brother JD, he talked briefly about why he respects BJ so much. “The Penn’s are a Hawaiian culture and I’ve surfed north shore and I been surfing since I was fifteen and I’ve had numerous experiences in Hawaii. It’s a tough culture and you have to grow up tough. If you’re a kid growing up in Hawaii, it’s a martial arts culture BJ’s been fighting since he was god knows how young, against guys bigger and the whole bit. He’s a true Hawaiian warrior and pay him lots of respect in the book.”

Not only is Bruce Buffer the voice of the UFC, he is also a world ranked poker player. Bruce has made it to the final table of the World Poker Tour and has played against Chris Moneymaker. When talking to Bruce about poker he likened it to fighting. “If a guy has a cut over his eye, your going to attack it, in poker if a guy has a low stack of chips your going to attack him.” When asked who the best poker player in MMA was, beside himself of course, he didn’t hesitate to answer. “Mike Swick.” He said he has played with his friend Swick a few times and he’s very patient and very smart.

Bruce goes more into depth on these topics and many more during the interview. To get the full interview click here…
