Internet sensation Tommy Toe Hold joined BJPENN.COM’s Fist-Ta-Cuff Radio show this past Sunday, June 16, 2013 to discuss his rise in popularity as well as his thoughts on the current happenings within the world of mixed martial arts.
Although this past weekend’s UFC 161 event took some criticism, Tommy himself believes that the co-main event, which saw Stipe Miocic win over Roy “Big Country” Nelson, was more than enough to make up for the card’s less-then-stellar fights.
“The Stipe Miocic fight alone was worth the price of admission, in my opinion,” Tommy started. “That was so cool to watch, not just because he was a big underdog but just the way he picked him apart. It was just really amazing, his strategy was brilliant.
“I thought that was the blueprint on how to beat Roy Nelson. He did literally everything exactly as he should have to win that fight, and it was perfect. It was very, very cool to watch.”
As previously mentioned, Miocic came into his bout with Nelson as an underdog, but proved to be a steeper challenge for “Big Country” than many expected. With Nelson now at least one step further back from a UFC title shot, Tommy believes a step back from the UFC altogether may be just what Nelson needs to stay relevant.
“Honestly, I think what would be best for him is maybe go to a smaller promotion that’s still prominent and sort of be the big fish [in a] small pond,” Tommy said of Nelson’s future in MMA. “I still think he can compete with a lot of these guys in the UFC that are in the top 10, but realistically I don’t see him getting any title shots in the UFC.
“And with his contract being up- I know the fans enjoy him, but I know obviously he and Dana have had their issues publically or whatever- I think it would be best for him to go to a Bellator or a World Series of Fighting or something like that and still be high profile. And obviously he’ll draw some money in, too with his name. I honestly think that would be best for him and his career.”
In regards to the aforementioned fights that were not as exciting as the Nelson-Miocic bout, Tommy pinpointed Jake Shields’ split-decision victory over Tyron Woodley as “rough” to watch. Despite the entertainment value being almost non-existent, Tommy said that he understands why certain fighters choose a less-entertaining style to further their own careers.
“When you have a fighter who’s in a situation where there’s a guy with a lot of power going up against him, I can see why he did what he did,” Tommy said of Shields’ strategy. “At the end of the day, these fighters are trying to win fights; that’s what going to keep them making money. Some guys will try to ham it up and say, ‘okay, you know what? We’re just going to stand and bang. I’m going to do that because that’s what the fans want.’ But there are other fighters like Jake Shields, like a lot of Greg Jackson guys and stuff that they’re going to do what they‘ve got to do to win. If that means the fight’s going to suck for the fans, that’s what it’s going to mean.”
