“By the end of it,” UFC heavyweight fighter Brandon Vera says of conversations he has with so-called haters, “they’re like, ‘You know what? You are a cool motherfucker, you’re all right.’ I end up turning them to a fan.”

If you were not a fan of Brandon Vera before, you may very well be after he makes fun of you.
At least that is what the UFC heavyweight fighter will have you believe. He recently spoke with BJPenn.com’s Fist-Ta-Cuff Radio about fans and haters in MMA, and the long-time UFC fighter said he’s capable of turning haters into fans.
Of course for the most part, Vera admits, he doesn’t worry too much about what people say about him online.
“Honestly, I just don’t worry about people like that, man. I don’t. Everybody has an opinion, and I say ‘F them,’ all day long. In their face, all day long. The reason why they’re hating is you’re doing something right. If you don’t have any haters, you’re doing something wrong. I think Kat Williams said it best, you need to go get you some [haters]…
“People, man, fuck them. If they’re not real fans, fuck them. People who always want to be a keyboard warrior, always got something else to say, that’s the first motherfucker who, when he’s in your face, is the 5 year-old fanboy all of a sudden, you know? So it’s just a bunch of fake-ass people behind the keyboard, and the worst part about it is that’s the true side of people that you’re seeing on the internet world, you know? Face to face everybody has to put on a front or has to be nice or fake or put on some kind of, I don’t know, façade.”
Of course, after a UFC career that spans the better part of a decade, Vera has certainly had his share of fans and haters. Over the years, he has taken an unusual approach to dealing with the latter. While most fighters (or popular figures, for that matter) try to ignore negative feedback, Vera says he will give it right back – a technique that he says has earned him no small number of fans.
“What I do is I dig into them,” Vera explained. “I’m from the east coast in the South, we learned how to talk shit back in the day. You learned how to talk smack in the third grade… You had to be quick with it. I’ll get on Twitter or Facebook and just go back and forth with them. No bullshit, I’ll say 80% of the guys and girls, fans, that I go back and forth with – back and forth, we’ll [joke about] mama’s, well talk about how they grew up, like we just talk smack. By the end of it, they’re like, ‘You know what? You are a cool motherfucker, you’re all right.’ I end up turning them to a fan.”
So while you may not be a fan of Brandon Vera’s fighting, chances are, if you at least talk with him whether it’s in person or online, he’ll be able to change that.
