KJ Noons spoke with BJPenn.com Radio Wednesday night about his entrance to the UFC and his first upcoming bout against top lightweight fighter, Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone. For Noons (11-6), the UFC debut marks a chance to shake off two recent losses in Strikeforce. Cerrone (19-5), who the UFC currently ranks as the number 6 lightweight contender, poses an exciting challenge for Noons. Both fighters favoring stand-up wars, this will surely be a fight the fans will enjoy.
In this first half of the interview, you can read Noons’ discussion of his entrance to the UFC, his opponent in Cerrone and more.
On finally entering the UFC, the Hawaii native felt happy with the opportunity to face some of the sport’s top lightweights in the organization. “I’m just really excited,” said Noons. “I’ve kind of been to a lot of the other organizations and it’s come full circle, so I’m really excited to get in there and compete against some of the great talent in the organization. I love the energy, the way it’s run and everything about the UFC. So it’s going to be fun, I’m really excited and I can’t wait.”
The first fighter among this great talent that Noons will face is the “Cowboy,” a fight slated for UFC 160 on May 25. “You know, I think stylistically this is going to be a great fight,” Noons remarked on the matchup. “He’s a really good fighter, he’s one of the top fighters at the UFC. I’m excited. I’m excited for the challenge. He’s just good all around. We’ll see- we’re going to work really hard in the camp and see what we can expose and see what we can take advantage of and win- and hopefully get the knockout.”
Though entering the UFC is a big step up in competition, Noons has been fighting at the top of the Strikeforce lightweight division for years. If we have learned anything the recent wave of Strikeforce fighters making an impressive entrance to the UFC, it’s that the Strikeforce fighters are here to fight their way to the top. Noons should be no exception. “It’s a good little streak going from the guys over at Strkieforce,” Noons remarked on the new additions, “I’m excited to get in there.”
For KJ, however, he is not coming in off an impressive streak of wins. Rather, he is coming off two decision losses; the first to the always tough Josh Thomson, and most recently to the son of Randy Couture, Ryan Couture. The latter decision, however, left many in doubt. Dana White himself tweeted, “Ryan is tough but KJ Noons got robbed!!!” For Noons, he takes it as a learning experience.
“I felt like I won the fight, but you can’t leave it in the judges hand. Even Dana White said I got robbed, so you know, what are you going to do? You can’t cry over spilled milk. I got to move forward, and get better, and move on to the next fight. It happened, the judges didn’t give me the win, there’s nothing really I can do about it. I feel like I won, but I got to get back in there and get better and show how it’s done on the next fight.”
And get back in there he has. Noons is training at the Arena in San Diego, continuing to work on his craft. “I’m training down here in San Diego. I’m training with Jeff Clark down here in San Diego, so we’re going to be bouncing around, hopefully get some different looks [with] Pat Speight, Jeff Clark; should be a good camp, I like it… I look back, and I try to definitely get better on my mechanics and work on those things, so the ultimate goal is to win decisively every round and eventually push an opponent to knock them out. But it’s tough at the top of the division, and all I can do is get better in the camps and hopefully get that outcome after the fight.”
If everything goes as the fans hope, Noons will engage with Cerrone in what promises to be a barn-burner of a fight. While not giving his gameplan away, Noons did hint at what we can expect. “Pretty much all my fights are stand up. We’ll see…”
