EXCLUSIVE | Bruce Buffer Discusses His New Autobiography and What Drives Him | Fist-Ta-Cuff Radio

On Sunday, May 12, 2013, the “Veteran Voice of the Octagon” Bruce Buffer took time out of his busy schedule to join BJPENN.COM’s Fist-Ta-Cuff radio program to talk about his journey with the UFC as well as his personal life that will be chronicled in his upcoming book, “It’s Time! My 360-Degree View of the UFC”.

The book, which will be released on Tuesday, May 14, takes a look at the life of one of the UFC’s most iconic figures both in-and-out of the Octagon. As was the case for much of the interview, Buffer made it clear that he wanted his story in inspire people.

“This book is about life, love and the pursuit of happiness, and I wanted it to be motivational, because I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth” Buffer said in the midst of running down stories from his past, which included seeing his mother sell her diamond wedding ring to support his family while he was still a teenager.

Upon seeing his mother’s selflessness in order to provide for her family, Buffer swore he would never borrow money from her and started his first business in high school when he was only 17 years old. By 19 he had his first company, which was only the first of many.

In his own words, Buffer gave up “living a grand life” and sold his business to pursue ventures with his brother, legendary ring announcer Michael Buffer. Oddly enough, Bruce was unaware of their relation until he saw Michael announcing on television and eventually found out that they were brothers. He eventually was able to see and interact with the biggest names in boxing and professional wrestling, as brother Michael had a hand in both realms as an announcer.

Eventually, Bruce Buffer found his way into announcing much like his brother, and has spent the better part of nearly two decades with the UFC. That path, he says, is what he strives to be the best at and is one of the biggest messages of his book.

“I don’t consider myself better than anyone else. The only difference is, I try to be the best I can be at the path that I choose in life, and that’s basically the message I’m trying to get across in a theoretical sense. But at the same time, to fulfill those UFC fans I want to make sure that I give them plenty of juice and juicy stuff about what they love, which is MMA and the UFC” said Buffer.

A best of both worlds type piece, Buffer is relishing in the positive reviews his work has garnered so far. Despite the strenuous work that went into putting together a book while maintaining his rigorous UFC schedule that has seen him miss only two events in nearly 17 years, he’s looking forward to releasing another somewhere down the line.

Money, however, won’t drive him to release it; passion will.

“I’ve never worried about making a dollar. I know I’ll always find a way to make a dollar,” Buffer said. “But I don’t want to earn that dollar unless I ‘m loving every single minute of my lifestyle, because I hate waking up and saying, ‘I’ve got to go to work.’ I just like waking up and saying, “I’ve just got to live my life.’”
