Exclusive | BJ Penn Transcript Part 3 | "They're All Bigger Than Me At 170 But I've Never Felt Like I Can't Beat Them" | UFC NEWS

Going into UFC 152 BJ Penn has total confidence at 170lbs.  BJ explains to the Pulver Brothers there are different challenges at different weight classes.  Not one of his opponents ever shook his confidence and neither will Rory MacDonald.

Abel:  “Just to talk about this fight a little bit.  Obviously it’s at 170lbs.  You’ve had some time off to reflect on maybe coming back or not coming back at all.  Was there ever anytime where you thought – Maybe I’ll cut to 155lbs again, maybe even try to get a super fight even as high as 185lbs you fought even Machida at heavyweight.  Weight is never an issue for you.  Do you think this is the optimal fight for you at 170lbs competing with guys like Rory who might come into the ring at 185lbs?”

BJ Penn:

“The last 3 guys I fought have been 25lbs heavier than me or 185lbs – John Fitch, Matt Hughes and Nick Diaz.  They’re all that much bigger than me.  Honestly, I never stood in from of me and thought when I walked away ‘There’s no way I can beat this guy’.  I’ve never felt that kind of talent standing in front of me.  I’ve never felt that kind of aura, that kind of ability except for the first time that I fought Jens…. I’m pumped up for this fight.

If everything goes well in this fight, I wouldn’t mind.  I’m going to have to drop weight to the fighting weight for this.  Maybe you will see me at 155lbs one day but honestly I don’t have any plans looking past this.  I don’t have plans for a title run or anything but you never know what the future may hold.

My last 3 a lot kept talking to me ‘oh why don’t you go back to lightweight?’  You know what I’m kind of fat right now.  I got to lose some weight and my last 3 fights I did it.  I’ve taken at welterweight so for me to just loose the weight and go up against these fast guys.

A lot of people they ask me ‘what’s the big difference with the weight classes’ I always say ‘The bigger guys are stronger but they are slower.  The smaller guys are a little weaker because they’re smaller but they’re quicker.  Everything  offers different challenges and I feel good about this whole thing.  I fought my last 3 fights at 170lbs and I got no fear whatsoever of any type of size difference.”
