EXCLUSIVE | ‘Bigfoot’ Silva more than ready for Hunt at UFC Fight Night 33

December 5, 2013 8:35 am by Brett Auten

UFC heavyweight Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva was the lone guest on last Friday’s BJPENN.COM Radio show.

Silva, of course, is slated to face fellow American Top Team teammate Mark Hunt on Dec. 7 from Brisbane, Australia at ‘UFC Fight Night 33: Bigfoot vs. Hunt.’
Silva discusses fighting a teammate, being there when Hunt injured his leg in 2012, and much more. You can listen to the entire interview HERE.

UFC compared to Strikeforce
“The UFC has big fights and they project me more. I had a great time in Strikeforce especially when I fought Fedor. But now I definitely like fighting in the UFC more because more people can see me and more people know about me and my work.”

Fighting an ATT teammate
“When I first heard about the fight I didn’t accept the fight because Mark Hunt is a good friend of mine and I also have a lot of respect for him. He’s a really dangerous fighter. But we are both employees of the UFC and there’s nothing we can do. We’re going to go there and we’re going to fight. I’m excited for the fight.”

Remember about training with Hunt
“When he was here we only trained together like, four times. He’s not trained here much. One thing I can say, and everybody knows, is that his right and his left hand are really dangerous.”

When Hunt got injured in training
“I remember that day. He was already hurt and I was really sad that I hurt him (with a leg kick). I felt really sad because he had to pull out of his fight. But like I said, we only trained a few times.  Another thing, when he was here, me and him were not in great shape. Both could not see the best or what we’ll have for this fight. That’s what makes this fight interesting.”

Fighting on Hunt’s turf
“Of course, that makes the fight more interesting. I know he has a lot of fans over there. Of course, I have my fans too. I like fighting in hostile territory. I like to be the underdog. That makes me more motivated to beat somebody when it’s in his own country.”

Dialed in
“If the fight was two weeks ago I was already ready for the fight. I was in Brazil training with Team Nogueira and Fabio Noguchi, who is a really famous Muay Thai coach in Brazil. He is the guy who trained Anderson Silva back in the day. In four weeks before the fight I did my camp in America at American Top Team and I’m ready. If the fight was today, I’m ready.”

How will the fight play out?
“Of course everybody knows that Mark Hunt is looking for the knockout and will try to knock me out but I’m prepared to fight wherever the fight goes. If the fight goes five rounds, I can fight five rounds. I’m prepared for everything. If the fight goes to the ground I’m going to be ready to submit him or land a TKO.”

Title shot Redemption
“I want to get that belt around my waist. The day that I decide not to want to be world champion, I’ll quit fighting. No matter who holds the belt, Velasquez or whoever it is, I train every day to chase the guy who has the belt. I don’t care who is going to have the belt. I don’t fight just to be there. I fight because I want to be the champion.”

Daniel Cormier or Cain Velasquez
“Both guys are really tough and they both came with a great game plan from AKA. I really do think that Cormier going to 205 is going to be successful because he’s really strong and powerful. But in a fight between Cain Velasquez and Cormier, I believe Cain Velasquez would be Cormier.”

Rematch with Travis Browne
“I’m not the guy who chooses my opponents. I’ve just always wanted to fight the best in the heavyweight division. I’m just an employee of the UFC. If the UFC said both guys are going to fight again then I’m just going to say, ‘OK, let’s do it.’ I don’t pick opponents. I don’t care.”
