Rashad Evans is coming off a loss to Ryan Bader at UFC 192 earlier this month. The bout was Evans first in the Octagon in nearly 2 years after recovering from an ACL tear.

Alexander Gustafsson is on a 2-fight skid that most recently saw him drop a split decision to Daniel Cormier at UFC 192 as well.

Gustafsson is currently ranked at #2 on the UFC’s official rankings while Evans sits at #6.

In Evans’ mind, this sets up a fight between the two men.

Evans spoke to Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour:

“We both lost our fights. We both are struggling to stay at the top of the weight class and both are desperate for a win. We might as well fight each other.”

Gustafsson’s manager says that ‘The Mauler’ doesn’t mind fighting Evans, but he must “handle a few things first” before committing to a fight.
