There have always been fighters who have stayed relevant in their respected division without reaching the top. Those fighters have become somewhat of “gate keepers” to up and coming fighters in the weight class. And, of course, when in that position it is inevitable that someone is going to call you out. Take Michael Bisping for example. Because of his incessant trash talking he has basically painted a target on his back for anyone looking to make their way up in the middle weight division.
As of late it seems that Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and Nate Diaz have fallen into that category as well. And it seems that there is a target on both fighters as far as Edson Barboza is concerned. He goes into further details of his call out via MMAJunkie:
“I need the opportunity to fight against those guys,” Barboza said. “I am ranked No. 11, so the only guys who are above me are the top 10. I need to fight those guys to get to my goal which is getting that belt. I earned that opportunity.”
“I think those fights would be interesting because they are the best one in my division, and I feel I am part of the best ones as well. So, I know if I fight one of those names, it would be a great show for the fans who will be watching those fights.”
Barboza called out the likes of Jim Miller as well. Miller seems to be the likeliest candidate for a fight with Barboza with Miller coming off of a victory against Fabricio Camoes at UFC 168 via arm bar submission. Diaz has barely been a blip on the radar since knocking out Gray Maynard in his last bout back in November. He has been in the news recently due to him turning down a fight with undefeated Russian Khabib Nurmagomedov. Cerrone’s calendar is already occupied with his upcoming bout against Adriano Martins at the end of this month on the 25th.
So, lets hear it Penn Nation! Who do you think is the most logical match-up for Edson Barboza?Tags: Donald Cerrone, Edson Barboza, Khabib Nurmagomedov, nate diaz
