Bellator Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez returned to Bellator MMA at Bellator 106 after spending the majority of last year dealing with contract negotiations. Alvarez most recently defeated Michael Chandler via split decision; Payback for Chandler defeating Alvarez almost two years before. He is set to face off against Chandler once again for a rubber match.
Widely exposed to the media, the dispute between Alvarez and Bellator caught the attention of former welterweight champion Ben Askren who was quick to lash out at the champion regarding his decision to battle Bellator MMA on the matter. This didn’t sit very well with the champion who sat down with Ariel Helwani and MMAFighting.com and was asked his opinion on Askren.
“Ben was very opinionated about how my situation was dealt with, although he had no clue about my situation. I’ll have a little more respect and say that I don’t know what happened with (Ben’s) situation, so I’m not going to comment. Rather than be ignorant, like he was, and go about saying some stupid sh** that he said.”
“Yeah, he annoyed me. He had a very uneducated opinion on how much money I should make. He knew how much I should ask for. That people are making $8/hr somewhere so I should take the money and run.”
(On being in ONE FC): “Yeah, maybe he should have shut up.”
Alvarez stated that the rubber match will be another attempt by the organization to take a crack at a Pay-Per-View event. There has not been a set date for the event, but Alvarez vs. Chandler is expected to be the headliner.
Askren has recently signed a six fight contract for the next two years with One FC. There has been no set date or opponent set for Askren as of now.Tags: Ben Askren, Eddie Alvarez, michael chandler
