Eddie Alvarez: “(Gilbert Melendez) doesn’t want to fight me”

Bellator’s Eddie Alvarez is preparing for his third matchup against possibly his most notable rival in Michael Chandler. However, during a promotional shooting for their upcoming fight Alvarez spoke about another fighter who could be placed up there on the list of Alvarez’s adversaries, Gilbert Milendez.

Dave Doyle of MMAfighting.com got the scoop when he spoke with Alvarez last Tuesday.

Alvarez was quick to make accusations concerning Melendez’s choice to stay with the UFC even after Bellator was willing to renegotiate his contract and offer him the same amount of money that the UFC was.

This was enough for Alvarez to come to the conclusion that Melendez is simply avoiding a fight with him.

“Gilbert doesn’t want to come anywhere where I’m at,’ said Alvarez. “Gilbert don’t even want to sign with a company where I’m at.”

There has always been talks about the two facing off but to no avail. And with Melendez staying with the UFC it doesn’t seem like the fight is going to happen anytime soon.

Fans have been teased with the possibility of a Melendez-Alvarez match several times over the years, but it hasn’t happened.

“He’s avoided me and will for years to come,” Alvarez said. “Gilbert had the opportunity in the Dream tournament, he didn’t… to sign with Bellator, he didn’t. And now… to come to Bellator where I am. He doesn’t want to come where I am. He’s a phony. He says he wants to fight me, he doesn’t want to fight me.”

Melendez isn’t the one to avoid a fight. However, as long as the two are fighting under different banners we can expect Alvarez to continue his rant.

Melendez, it must be said, doesn’t have a reputation for avoiding fights. But as long as the two remain in separate companies, you’ll have a hard time convincing Alvarez otherwise.

“He says he wants to fight me when I make headlines,” Alvarez said. “That’s the only time. Gilbert Melendez does not want to fight me. He knows its a bad fight for him, a bad night for him, that’s the real truth with that.”

Only time will tell if the two ever get the chance to face off. It’s a bout that all fight fans would want to see, and with the popularity of these fighters with both UFC and Bellator fans alike it is sure to be a huge draw.

So, lets hear it Penn Nation! Who out there wants to see this bout and do you think that it will ever happen?
