To add insult to injury, Bellator MMA middleweight Doug “The Rhino” Marshall (18-7 MMA, 4-1 BMMA) has failed his post fight drug screening after being knocked out by Bellator MMA middleweight Champion Alexander Shlemenko (49-7 MMA, 10-1 BMMA) during Bellator 109 earlier this month.
According to Pennsylvania’s athletic commission, the middleweight has been suspended for indefinitely for testing positive for an unnamed banned substance.
Although Executive Director for the PSAC Gregory Sirb, nor Doug Marshall, could not be contacted for a comment, Bellator CEO Bjorn Bebney stated,
“Greg Sirb at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission operates one of the best commissions in the country,” stated Bebney. “Doug Marshall will have to adhere to any and every penalty that the Pennsylvania Commission delivers.
“When competing at the highest level, fighters are expected to train and prepare for their fights according to the rules and should fully expect to be tested at every Bellator event.”
Marshall was stopped by a series of devastating body shots to the liver by Shlemenko on the November 22nd event that took place at Sands Bethlehem Even Center in Bethlehem, Pa. and aired live on Spike TV.
The two were originally set to face off in September at Bellator 98, however Marshall was forced to withdraw due to a broken hand. Brett Cooper, whom Marshall knocked out in the finale of the Bellator Season 8 middleweight tournament, took his place and lost a decision to Shlemenko in September.
According to Michael Mazzulli, head of the Mohegan tribal commission in Uncasville, Conn. Marshall gained a therapeutic- use exemption for the use of replacement testosterone.
Marshall is a former WEC Champion and winner of the Bellator Season 8 middleweight tournament. He made his Bellator debut in November 2012 with a knockout victory over Kala Hose at Bellator 82. The highly decorated Marshall should be back in the cage soon and is expected to return in early February after the fighter pays a fine and undergoes another test.
