Daniel Cormier Hoping Manuwa Takes out Gustafsson

Daniel Cormier recently moved down in weight to the Light Heavyweight division. In doing so he continued his undefeated winning streak with a TKO victory over Patrick Cummins in his debut.

Cormier was originally scheduled to fight Rashad Evans, however an injury sidelined Evans. The fight could have been the bout that would have launched DC into title contention, but sometimes things just don’t work out that way.

Now Cormier is in waiting for another opponent. Someone who will launch him into the number one contender spot.

But there is a good possibility that Alexander Gustafsson could beat him to it. However, “The Mauler” has to get through his next opponent in Jimi Manuwa first. And because DC believes “if Jimi Manuwa can get this done I get to fight for the belt next,”he has claimed himself “the biggest Jimi Manuwa fan on the planet,  he stated on “The Great MMA Debate Podcast.” ”

Cormier has high hopes in the light heavyweight division. The undefeated Cormier dropped weight and began his journey at 205 to avoid fighting his friend and training partner Cain Velasquez who is the current UFC Heavyweight title holder, and gain his own title to continue his legacy.

Though Cormier holds no ill will toward Gustafsson he knows that he stands in his way to pursue that legacy.

“I have nothing against Alexander Gustafsson. I think Alexander Gustafsson is great,” said Cormier. “I admire Alexander Gustafsson. The only thing is Alexander Gustafsson is a huge road block in my journey to try and become the champion.”

If, by chance, Gustafsson comes out on top against Manuwa, Cormier is going to have to find an impressive opponent to push him into a top spot. And according to DC, thats exactly what he’s hoping for.

“Whatever the next fight is, I don’t’ care if it’s a title eliminator for the next guy, I just need a name that actually moves me into the number one contender spot after this fight,” he said.
