BJPenn.Com Radio returns tonight with another star studded cast of MMA personalities. Bryan Levick & Mitch Ciccarelli will also preview this Saturday’s UFC on Fuel TV: Barao vs. McDonald card that will held at the Wembley Arena in London, England. Michael McDonald and Renan Barao will battle for Barao’s UFC Interim Championship in what will be the first title fight on Fuel TV. There were also some interesting fight announcements made this week that we will discuss.
Joining the show first will be former Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Josh Thomson who just returned to the States from China where he was filming a movie. The American Kickboxing Academy trained fighter has a huge fight to prepare for on what is turning out to be a great card on paper. Thomson will face former UFC #1 lightweight contender Nate Diaz on April 20 in San Jose on UFC on Fox 7. The event will be held at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, an arena where Strikeforce held the majority of their shows.
A finalist on The Ultimate Fighter season 8, Vinny Magalhaes is one of the best pure Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu grapplers in all of MMA. He was 0-2 during his first run in the UFC, but made a successful return at UFC 152 where he submitted Igor Pokrajac via armbar in the second round. He has been campaigning for a big fight since then and seems to have gotten his wish as he will face Phil Davis at UFC 159. The war of words has already started and Magalhaes is never one to hold anything back.
Known to fans as “Crazy” Bob Cook, the co-founder of American Kickboxing Academy will join us to talk about his fighters insane schedule. Cook has over 20 years training as a mixed martial artist and 10 years experience on the business side of MMA. Along with DeWayne Zinkin, Cook began Zinkin Entertainment & Sports Management where they handle the careers of many former and current champions including, Chuck Liddell, Cain Velasquez, Forrest Griffin, Luke Rockhold, Josh Thomson, Daniel Cormier and many others. The timing of his appearance couldn’t be more perfect as last night the UFC announced Velasquez will defend the heavyweight title he recently reclaimed against Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva at UFC 160 on May 25.
Speaking of perfect timing, Daniel Cormier will join us once again. The former Olympic wrestler will no doubt have plenty to say about the IOC’s decision to remove wrestling from the Olympics beginning in 2020. The decision has caused a huge uproar throughout the MMA community as many fighters come from a wrestling background and have such a great passion for the sport. Cormier will also discuss his long awaited bout against Frank Mir at UFC on Fox 7 on April 20 in San Jose.
MFC President Mark Pavelich will end the show to promote this Friday’s MFC 36 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The card will be highlighted by two title fights including a rematch between Mukai Maromo and the last man to have defeated him, Graham Spencer. The two will battle it out for the vacant MFC Lightweight Championship. Elvis Mutapcic will defend his middleweight title against TUF season 16 contestant Sam Alvey. Pavelich works as hard as anyone in MMA and isn’t afraid to let you know it.
