Dana White Says There Will be No Interim Title During Pettis Absence

While another UFC champion is sidelined for a number of months due to injury, UFC President Dana White says there will be no interim champion.  The lightweight division will simply have to wait for Anthony Pettis to recovery and defend his title.

With the recent news that Anthony Pettis tore the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) in his knee during training, the logical question to ask UFC President Dana White is if the UFC will offer an interim championship in the lightweight division.

Nope,” Dana White said to reporters on Thursday.  “It’s very unfortunate.  I’m not kidding you guys right now, I think the two most talented guys right now, the two guys I think are the hottest prospects to become huge superstars are Renan Barao and Pettis.  Obviously the Pettis thing is unfortunate.

White had said earlier this week that Pettis will be having surgery on his knee, which would have the newly crowned champion looking at a return in four to six months.  It has left title challenger Josh Thomson without a fight at UFC on FOX 9 next month, and it has also left the lightweight division waiting to see what will happen next.
