There has been a lot of controversy when it comes to undefeated Russian lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov. Not that Khabib has done anything wrong, in fact its because he has done everything right! With a record of 21-0 in his professional career, along with being on a five fight win streak since entering into the UFC, Dana White is having an impossible time finding the guy an opponent.
He was originally set to face off against Gilbert Melendez who dropped out of the fight suddenly. Then, Melendez’s team mate Nate Diaz was offered the fight, and though his management says otherwise, he declined the fight as well.
These actions have UFC President Dana White questioning whether these fighters are as game as once presumed.
“Guys can say whatever they want, ‘I’ll fight this guy, I’m not afraid,’” White said Wednesday during an interview with FOX Sports 1. “Nobody wants to fight this guy.”
Diaz, not being the type to keep his mouth shut, has blatantly told his boss via Twitter to “pay me”. But according to White, Nate is in no position to attempt a contract negotiation. Especially considering Nate has lost two of his past three outings.
“I don’t dislike the kid, I like the kid very much,” said White. “You’ve won one of your last three fights and you’re looking for a contract renegotiation? The kid makes money, the kid makes very good money, and to ask for more money to fight makes no sense. Or he wants a title fight makes no sense. You won one of your last three, you looked impressive against Gray Maynard, and Diaz is one of those guys, he’s a kid who always comes out to fight and is exciting. But to try to renegotiate.”
White is still on the hunt for an opponent for Nurmagomedov, and with Khabib ready to throw down at a moments notice, White has his back on this one.
“When you turn down fights like this, and it’s not those two (Melendez and Diaz), it tells me no one wants to fight this kid. This kid says ‘They shouldn’t want to fight me. They’re smart.’ He’s calling everybody out, he wants to fight, he’s my kind of guy.”
