Junior dos Santos may have lost the Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight belt to Cain Velasquez last December, but he has a chance for an opportunity to get it back.
At the UFC 159 post-fight press conference at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., UFC President Dana White said that dos Santos (15-2) will be the No. 1 contender for a title shot if he beats Mark Hunt (9-7) in the co-main event at UFC 160: Velasquez vs. Bigfoot 2.
If the fight goes in his favor, dos Santos will get a shot of the winner of the main-event fight at the same event between Velasquez (11-1) and Antonio Silva (18-4). Dos Santos faced Velasquez twice in the UFC. He knocked Velasquez out in their first fight in the first round in November 2011 at UFC on FOX 1: Velasquez vs. Dos Santos and was named the UFC heavyweight champion. He lost his belt last December at UFC 155: Dos Santos vs. Velasquez 2 by unanimous decision, which was his first loss in the UFC.
A rubber match is not guaranteed with dos Santos and Velasquez. If Silva defeats Velasquez for the belt, then Santos and Silva can possibly go head-to-head if they both win that night. UFC 160 is slated to take place May 25 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev.Tags: Antonio Silva, Bigfoot, bigfoot silva, Cain Velasquez, Dana White, JDS, Junior Dos Santos, Mark Hunt, MMA NEWS, UFC 159 post-fight press conference, UFC 160, ufc news
