After his lackluster decision victory against Jake Ellenberger, many fans and media members believed Rory MacDonald was just having an off night. Now, after his fight with Robbie Lawler at UFC 167, where he attempted to nullify Lawler’s offense with little success, UFC President Dana White was critical of his style.
“I can’t tell if he doesn’t let it go or he’s just not that well-rounded,” White said “He’s just very one-dimensional.”
White went on to say “[MacDonald] has this style of nullifying a fight. He has a style of just making the action stop,” he said. “I think that a lot of guys, he bugs them out and gets in their head when he starts doing that and they feel like they can’t land and it ends up being this staring competition.”
“All the way leading up to this fight, I kept saying this is the perfect fight for MacDonald… because Robbie Lawler is going to take it to him,” White said. “Robbie Lawler has this style of wrestling and hands and the power to hurt you that you’re going to have to fight completely different than you have been.”
Now, it is unclear where MacDonald stands in the division, but White seems to think that something in his style needs to change.
